Volunteering
Volunteering in school
We are always keen to receive help from parents, carers and other adults who wish to gain experience of volunteering in a primary school environment. Those who are interested in helping in school should speak to the School Office to arrange an appointment with the Headteacher or use the contact form below.
People can help in many different ways, including:
- Sharing skills and interests e.g. talking about their job, helping with activities in their area of expertise
- Listening to children read and helping them with their work in the classroom - there are additional requirements for such volunteers: see below
- Accompanying children on educational visits
- Helping supervise breaks and lunchtimes
- Making costumes for productions
- Maintaining the school's gardens
- Becoming part of the Local Governing Body
Safeguarding information for volunteers
Volunteers in school are all checked by the Government’s Disclosure and Barring Service in line with child protection guidelines.
The majority of our roles - whether as paid employees or as unpaid volunteers - involve regulated activity.
Regulated activity means a person would be:
- Responsible, on a regular basis in a school or college, for teaching, training, instructing, caring for or supervising children; or
- Carrying out paid, or unsupervised unpaid, work regularly in a school or college where that work provides an opportunity for contact with children; or
- Engaging in intimate or personal care or overnight activity, even if this happens only once and regardless of whether they are supervised or not
It is an offence to apply for a role with us if an applicant is barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.
If you are thinking of becoming a volunteer in school, you should also be aware of our Privacy Notice which relates to Governors and Other Volunteers.
